Ribeira Brava

This county is so called because its valley is crossed by a very flowing stream during the rainy season, a fact that caused a lot of damage along its 8 km route.

Dating back to the early 15th century, Ribeira Brava is one of the oldest towns in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Its settlement began between the first and second quarters of the 15th century, and became a parish right after Funchal and Machico, shortly after the death, in 1460, of Infante D. Henrique.

From the beginning, the river in this town played a fundamental role in connecting the various points in the interior of the island. At the same time, its proximity to the sea has made it an important connection port. However, it was only between 1904 and 1908 that a small docking and disembarkation pier was built, drilling into the rock to the east to create an access to the small landing stage.

Occupying an area of about 65 km2 and formed by the parishes of CampanárioRibeira Brava, Serra de Água and Tabua, the council was created on May 6, 1914, by dismemberment of the councils of Ponta do Sol and Câmara de Lobos. the youngest in the Madeira archipelago.

In addition to the constant demographic increase, the efforts of Visconde Francisco Correia de Herédia greatly contributed to the elevation of this locality to a municipality, as this distinguished personality was responsible for several improvements in Ribeira Brava, such as the enlargement and opening of new ones. streets, the construction of a small theater (currently the municipal library) and the rebuilding of the old Fort of São Bento. His passion for this place was such that the Viscount adopted the name “Ribeira Brava”, becoming: Francisco Correia de Herédia Ribeira Brava.

On March 29, 1928, the parish of Ribeira Brava was elevated to a town, an attribution that testifies to the growing importance of this municipality over time.

Thanks to its central geographic location and its excellent accessibility, the Municipality of Ribeira Brava continues to be a fundamental communication point for the island, being also very popular with Madeirans and tourists, who find many reasons for interest here.

A curious fact, and possibly thanks to the Portuguese maritime expansion, is the germination of Ribeira Brava in a municipality on the island of São Nicolau (Cape Verde archipelago).
